Are solar batteries worth it, and do they work during outages?
Separate energy storage, backup capability and battery replacement costs.
The answer first
Batteries shift surplus electricity to later use but add cost and losses. Outage operation depends on the inverter, isolation equipment and supported backup circuits, not the battery alone.
Check usable energy and output power
kWh measures stored energy; kW measures simultaneous power output. Request usable capacity, charge/discharge limits, compatible equipment and warranty terms for the actual model.
Typical on-grid systems stop during outages
Grid-connected systems need protection against feeding a dead grid. Panels alone therefore do not guarantee power during an outage. Ask the installer to specify backup circuits, transfer time and supported loads, with safe testing procedures.
Costs to include in the plan
Include the initial battery in the total system budget and enter future replacement cost. The model charges from surplus solar up to one cycle per day, without grid charging or a backup-duration guarantee. Optional charge/discharge and reserve constraints can match equipment specifications.
