Is solar worth it in Thailand? Calculate your payback
Separate bill savings, loan payments, maintenance and replacements to compare solar payback without guaranteed-return claims.
The answer first
Value depends on total cost, usage timing, production and long-term expenses. Homes do not all share the same payback period. Compare bills before and after installation, then deduct loan payments, maintenance and replacements to assess actual cash flow.
Simple payback vs owner cash flow
Illustration: a THB 150,000 cash purchase with THB 30,000 annual bill savings has a 5-year simple payback before other costs. With THB 2,000 annual maintenance, net savings are THB 28,000 and simple payback is about 5.36 years. Both examples omit degradation, replacements, interest and time value of money.
Why daytime use matters
Electricity consumed as it is generated reduces grid purchases. Do not count unsold surplus as revenue. Batteries shift energy to later use but add cost and losses. Compare a smaller system and changed usage timing as alternatives.
Test a lower-yield case
Keep the same plan and reduce yield, increase maintenance or add replacements. Check whether a large expense makes cumulative cash flow negative again. The calculator shows sustained payback within the horizon, NPV and remaining debt; read these alongside the payback figure.
